New to Dahlias? Key Considerations for Choosing Good Starter Varieties

Choosing your first dahlia varieties comes down to a few key factors: your climate, how you plan to use the blooms, and how much maintenance you're willing to do.

Climate matters more than people expect. In cooler zones (3–5), focus on earlier-blooming varieties. In warmer climates, you have more flexibility. Cache Valley sits in zone 5–6, and we breed our stock accordingly.

Think about bloom use too. Cut flower growers want long stems and lasting vase life. Garden growers want color and structure. Both goals lead to different variety choices — we're happy to help you find the right fit.
