Higher BRIX Values Means Increased Pest Resistance

BRIX is a measure of dissolved sugars in plant sap. The higher the reading, the healthier and more nutrient-dense the plant — and research consistently shows that high-BRIX plants are far less attractive to insects and fungal disease.

The mechanism is elegant: pests and pathogens thrive on imbalanced, low-sugar plant tissue. A well-fed plant with strong cell walls simply doesn't offer the environment they need to take hold.

We test BRIX regularly throughout the season. Readings above 12 in dahlia foliage are our target, and we adjust soil inputs accordingly when readings dip.
